For well over a decade, a quiet work has been going on in a sensitive Southeast Asia nation where over a hundred different tribal groups still wait to hear the Good News. Because of official opposition to the spread of the gospel and because of the real risk of harm both to the work there and to the many national believers, the name of the country and the work must remain anonymous.
But although the government is fiercely opposed to the spread of the News, the people are hungry for it, and over the years God has brought numerous workers in this nearly forgotten nation. In 1996 a small school was established in the capital to provide quality, low-cost English language education to students. In the past twelve years that school has become one of the most well-known English schools in the country, with approximately 280 currently enrolled students and over 2,000 alumni. The relationships built between these students and the school staff members are bridges for the Father's love to be shown to many who would never see it otherwise.
In addition, the school is a way for overseas workers to get a visa into this creative access nation, learn the language, and explore long-term options. Workers scattered throughout the nation have been or are teachers and staff at the school.
In recent years, many new areas of outreach have opened up. Right now the organisation has a centre that ministers to street children and children at risk of abuse and neglect. There are English language centres in three of the largest cities. And there is a Skills Development Centre that takes young people "mostly brothers and sisters from village families" and provides intensive training in secular skills as well as a solid foundation in real Truth. They leave the centre with many of the tools needed to make a difference in ways only eternity will unveil.
There is tremendous need in every area of this country, and the work going on is only a beginning. Long-term workers there report that He is drawing many young families to work in this place, and there is a sense that a great harvest "the fruit of decades of prayer and work" is just beginning.
Prayer Points
- Long-term overseas workers, who daily need His grace, protection and wisdom.
- Strength, wisdom and protection for national believers who continually risk all they hold dear for their faith.
- Strength for those believers currently imprisoned or missing, and for the families who are left behind.
- Favour with the government, especially the local officials who often have tremendous power.
- A work of the Father in the hearts of those who receive help from the various centres, that they would recognise the Source of the love they sense.
- Eternal fruit that will bring glory to the One in whose name we speak.
